Gravel Calculator
Work out how much gravel you need for a driveway, path, or landscaping project. Enter your area and depth to get the volume in cubic yards and cubic feet, plus an estimated weight in tons.
Gravel calculator
Volume is exact geometry. Weights and bag counts assume typical densities and bag yields — treat them as an estimate, not a quote.
How to use it
- Measure the length and width of the area in feet.
- Set the depth in inches.
- Pick the material, then read off the cubic yards (and bags or tons) you need.
The calculator multiplies area by depth for an exact volume, then converts to cubic yards and estimates weight or bag count from typical material figures.
Frequently asked questions
- How much gravel do I need?
- Multiply the area (length × width) by the depth, then convert to cubic yards. A 10 ft × 10 ft area at 2 inches deep needs about 0.62 cubic yards. Use the calculator above for your exact dimensions.
- How many tons of gravel are in a cubic yard?
- Roughly 1.3 to 1.5 US tons per cubic yard for most gravel, depending on the material and moisture. The calculator estimates tons from a typical bulk density.
- How deep should a gravel layer be?
- About 2 inches for walkways and 4 inches or more over a compacted base for driveways. Order roughly 10% extra for compaction and waste.
